    • One item (glasses or contact lens) is covered every 2 years by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). 
    • You will have to pay for a new pair of glasses out-of-pocket if replacement is needed within 2 years. 
    • If you have health insurance through your job and have completed the minimum amount of time required at your job, you may be eligible for some coverage. 
    • If you are getting a pair of glasses for the first time since your arrival and do not have a prescription, you will need to see an Optometrist for an eye exam which is also covered under the IFHP.  By presenting your social assistance/welfare slip and proof that you are covered under the IFHP to the optometrist, consultation is free. The provider requests a copy of the prescription. 
    • You are not obligated to buy glasses or contact lenses from the optician who did your eye exam. However, they are obligated to give you a copy of your prescription so that you can buy the glasses elsewhere.
    • Make sure to get a copy of your prescription from whoever did your eye exam.
