The shelter allowance program helps low-income individuals and families who spend a large part of their budget on housing.
If you live in Quebec, you're renting apartment and you have filed your Quebec income tax return, you may be eligible to receive up to $170 in financial support each month.
The Shelter Allowance Program takes into account the number of people in your household, the type of household you live in, your income and your monthly rent.
Eligibility criteria
- Individual 50 or Over Living Alone
- Couple With no Dependent Children in Which at Least One Person Is Aged 50 or Over
- Couple With One Dependent Child
- Couple With Two or More Dependent Children
- Single-Parent Family With One or Two Dependent Children
- Single-Parent Family With Three or More Dependent Children
Note: If you have a spouse but you do not live together, choose individual or one of the single-parent family options.

How to apply
Online
Apply for the shelter allowance using the online service in My Account for individuals.
By mail
Forms:
-Shelter Allowance Application (LEX-165-V) to apply.
- Statement of Rent (LEZ-14-V) if you rent a room, apartment or house, or live in a mobile home on rented land.
- Request for direct deposit form
Mail the form(s) and required documents to:

Re-apply Each Year
If you are currently receiving the shelter allowance, you must apply again each year to continue receiving payments.
To receive assistance from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026, you must submit a new application, even if your situation has not changed.
