Where and how to Find an Apartment

    Finding an apartment in Montreal can be stressful, especially if you don’t know the city or speak either English or French. 


    Centre Le Pont and Foyer du Monde have partnered to create a series of videos designed to help newcomers find their first apartment in Québec. There are a total of four videos in this series.     General information about leases

     

    • Most leases are valid for one year, but some may be shorter. Talk to the landlord about how long they’re looking to rent the space out for before signing the lease. Keep in mind that July 1st is the most common date for signing a lease in Montréal, but there’s no law to say you can’t sign at another time. 
    • Your lease contract must be written in French or English.
    • Your lease has to specify the duration of the lease as well as the amount of rent to be paid on the first day of each month. 
    • Payments are generally made by e-transfer, cheque or cash.  
    • A renter has the right to require that he or she be given a receipt for the payment of rent. A receipt can be useful in the event of a dispute. 

    • It is wise to keep proof of payment for at least three years. 

       

     

    There are different ways to find an apartment:

    • You can spot the "for rent" signs or "a louer" in french
    • Word of mouth: if you have a friend or family that knows and apartment for rent
