French is the official language of Québec. Learning French is essential to integrate into Québec’s society. The Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration offers free French courses to people living in Quebec. Regardless of your knowledge of French, you can register for the courses and learn or improve the language.

There are 3 types of courses available:
Full-time French courses are available for beginner and intermediate levels. The registration and tuition fees are free. However, fees for teaching materials may apply in some educational institutions.
How to register
To register in a full-time french course you must complete the following online registration Consultation of your online file (gouv.qc.ca)
Find the nearest adult education centres that offer full-time French courses in the map (in French only).
You must provide:
- Evidence of your claim for asylum
- The adult education centre will advise what other documents they need from you.

Part-time French courses are available for beginner and intermediate levels. The registration and tuition fees are free. However, fees for teaching materials may apply in some educational institutions. Part-time courses are given as day, evening or weekend courses. There are 8 to 12 weeks of lessons per session. The schedule depends on the institution where you register. You can choose the number of hours of lessons per week that suits you best when you register:
- 4 hours
- 6 hours
- 9 hours
- 12 hours
- 15 hours
Part-time courses are given in education service centres and partner organizations of the Gouvernement du Québec. A few classes are available online. You can register in the closest school to your home.

Online courses (entirely online or online with in-person support)
In order to register for an online course, you must be living in Quebec. There are two options for online courses:
1. French courses entirely online
In this course the registration, the classes and the evaluations are completed entirely online. You must need a computer and access to the internet. You will learn French at your own pace. The online courses will take approximately 6 hours of your time a week (you decide your schedule).

2. Online French courses with in-person support
Take the course online but go to a training centre to register for the courses, meet your teacher (optional), establish a plan of study according to your situation (schedule), and take final evaluations. You must need a computer and access to the internet. You will learn and improve your French at your own pace. Your level of French will be assessed prior to starting the course.
How to register
Find the nearest adult education centres offering online French courses in the map (in French only).
Contact the school of your choice directly to book an appointment. They will give you the next steps to complete the registration.
You will know the start date of the course after you complete the registration.
After your enrollment, an assessment will be done to evaluate your knowledge in French and place you in the correct level.
