Do I have to pay to learn French in Quebec?

No. The Government of Québec offers free French courses for immigrants living in Quebec. 

Do I receive financial assistance as a refugee claimant?

No. The Government of Québec offers free French courses for refugee claimants. Some official schools may provide a STM document to apply for reduced fare (as student), you must speak to the school directly to verify if they offer this document. Financial assistance is available for accepted refugees only.

Is a full-time course my only option?

No. There are different course options.

Is childcare included?

It depends. Some schools may offer daycare/childcare services. You must ask the school directly upon registration. If the school does not offer childcare, you may be able to register your child in a Halte-Garderie. Visit Halte-Garderies by Neighbourhood to find a community center in your area.

Do I qualify for a reduced STM card?

You must ask the school directly upon registration. Some schools offer reduced STM (student) card. 

How old do I need to be to enroll in the francization program?

You must be 16 years old or older. 

I don’t know any French, is this course for me?

Yes. The classes are available for beginner and intermediate levels. After your enrollment in the program, an assessment will be done to evaluate your knowledge in French. The evaluation might take between 15 to 60 minutes and might be in person or by phone. 

What am I going to learn in these courses?

Besides learning French, these courses are oriented towards learning the Quebec culture, values, community, labour market, etc.
